River Plate Unveils the 2024/25 Home Kit by adidas: Like in ‘86

River Plate, one of Argentina's most iconic football clubs, has unveiled their new home kit for the 2024/25 season. Designed by adidas, the new jersey draws inspiration from the historic 1986 shirt, which holds a special place in the hearts of River Plate fans. That year, River won its first-ever Copa Libertadores by defeating América de Cali in the finals as well as their second international title, obtaining the Intercontinental Cup against Steaua Bucharest.

A Homage to 1986: The Year of Glory

The 2024/25 River Plate home kit is a nod to the club's triumphant past. In 1986, River Plate etched their name in the annals of football history by securing their first Copa Libertadores trophy. This monumental victory against América de Cali in the finals as well as their victory in the Intercontinental Cup not only established River as a dominant force in South American football but also solidified the club's identity and pride. The new kit takes direct inspiration from the jersey worn during that unforgettable campaign.

Design Elements: The Devil is in the Details

The new adidas kit retains River Plate’s classic white base with the iconic diagonal red sash running across the front—synonymous with the club’s identity. However, this year’s design introduces subtle yet impactful elements that set it apart from previous iterations and make it more in line with the shirt of ‘86.

Some of the most distinctive features of the 2024/25 kit are the addition of red lines bordering both sides of the jersey, the back of the shirt being without the cross band that features on all River home kits and finally the motto "Grandeza" emblazoned on the back of the neck. Translated as "Greatness," this word captures the essence of River Plate's identity. It serves as a constant reminder to players and fans alike of the club's illustrious past, its storied achievements, and the standard of excellence it strives to uphold. However, gone are the days of the shirt being sponsored by iconic brands such as Sanyo and Quilmes. The club now sponsored by the less illustrious Codere.

adidas has managed to strike a perfect balance between honouring River Plate's rich history and presenting a modern interpretation of a classic design. The 2024/25 kit pays homage to the 1986 jersey without being a direct replica, allowing it to stand as a unique piece in its own right.
